IndyLan (Mobile Virtual Learning for Indigenous Languages) is an educational tool tailored for individuals seeking to delve into Europe's endangered languages and the accompanying cultures. The IndyLan app serves as a bridge for English, Spanish, Norwegian, Swedish, and Finnish speakers to explore Gaelic, Scots, Cornish, Basque, Galician, and Saami - all residing on the endangered spectrum. Emphasizing a supplementary role, IndyLan aligns with various language and culture courses, positioning itself as a resource for self-study.
Within IndyLan's database are approximately 4,000 vocabulary items encompassing terms and expressions across nearly 100 distinct categories. Users can engage with modes such as Vocabulary, Phrases, Dialogues, Grammar, Aural Comprehension, and Culture.
By offering multiple study modes to practice vocabulary acquisition - complete with illustrations for enhanced concept assimilation - IndyLan ensures audio support across all elements like vocabulary items, phrases, and dialogues. The inclusion of a dedicated Culture tab, housing texts, music, and imagery, enriches the learning experience by providing insight into the heritage and culture of the language communities at hand.
Adopting a holistic approach to language learning, IndyLan propels its mission beyond education - aiming to revitalize endangered languages in contemporary societies and economies. Through the IndyLan app, the project envisions safeguarding these linguistic legacies and cementing their relevance in today's world.
